It all seems so long ago and far away...
We've been back two weeks now. We were ready to be home, but we do miss living on glide time, and we miss each other a bit too. Was the trip worth it? Every minute and every cent. We are fortunate to have spent so much time together and to seen so much together. I would do it again in a heartbeat, and I'm pretty sure the other three would too. In Australia we stayed in 30 camping grounds and travelled nearly 8,500km in the Spaceship. We would recommend it as a choice for travel, but only if you're prepared to live in small spaces and get a little grimy. Queensland is wonderful for a road trip - all travelling is hard work, but we were able to have many diverse adventures while having the comfort of an English speaking country and a way of life similar to our own. If you're looking for a different kind of holiday, then we would highly recommend Intrepid Travel. Thailand was brilliant...we loved it...we're going back...someday... And of course, staying with friends like Karen and the Keenan family is quite hard to top. So, I'll sign off with these few pics from the last three weeks or so of the trip...cheers!
Watching the hang gliders near Port Douglas.
Coconut munching at Cape Tribulation.
More nuts at beautiful Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the sea.
If we had a favourite bat, then Sammy would be the one.
Swim at Port Douglas - if you dare!
On the beach at Port Douglas
Carrying 'home' the pineapple, the watermelon, the marshmallows... Chillagoe
The hottest winter's day of our lives - Chillagoe.
Inside 'The Great Western Hotel' at Rockhampton.
On Lady Musgrave Island - 'just like the brochures, Mum!'
On the semi-sub, Lady Musgrave cruises.
With the family at Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast.
8,500km later we leave Nostromo behind.

Happy Birthday Steve!
Belated, as usual! Happy Happy Birthday, Steve!
We've had a great week here. The weather has threatened rain every day but only delivered in small doses. Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of Barbara and Chris we have been to Seaworld, Movie World and (minus me) Wet and Wild. We have enjoyed the company of family - warming us up for what is to come!
This is it. Home time tomorrow...
We are looking forward to being home again. The children have had a last surf and boogy board this morning. The packing is fun for all, and we do seem to have enough space - yay! We've not really 'shopped' while here (Gordy might disagree!) but with 96 days away things do tend to swell a bit!
Thanks to everyone who has tuned in to our travels and kept us going with enthusiastic and newsy comments! There will be one more...with some pics :) xxxx

Long time, no write...
We hope everyone at home are enjoying the school hols! We are on the Gold Coast now and there are plenty of kiwi accents around, that's for sure!
This time next week we'll be home. Finn can't wait to get to the skate park, Johnny!
I think it is fair to say that 3/4 of the Caddie Cruisers are looking forward to being home, but we are having a great week with Gordy's Mum and Dad and sister Barbara and brother-in-law Chris here. We are all staying in Mermaid Beach - they have a unit together and we are in a camping ground close by. We are living the high life in a cabin...and were upgraded when we arrived to one with a bathroom! and sheets! and towells! and flat screen telly! We have never been upgraded before and there was a little dance of victory when it happened!
We had a lovely day at Seaworld yesterday. Finn and Rosa are now planning to open the Caddie Dolphin Training School as they think that looks like a cool job. Rosa is allergic to cats, so obviously dolphins are the next step.
Finn went out on a fishing trip this morning with Ray and Chris. Lucky boy, they had a whale encounter (5m from the boat) and dolphins came to visit them too. He caught a fish, so all in all a great adventure.
Rosa came to Harbour Town with the rest of us - she bought a few bits and bobs and chewed k-bars so she was happy too. Gordy even managed to select, try on, and buy a very nice shirt for himself. We've all learnt new skills on this trip, you see. Rosa doesn't approve of the shirt, it's pink. She thought black would be more suitable.
Since our last post from Airlie Beach we headed south through the Eungella National Park, staying at the rustic Platypus Camping Ground. Actual Platypus remained elusive to us, but the area was beautiful. We stayed a night in the (not so) fragrant sugar mill town of Sarina (wonderful campground made the place). We returned to Rockhampton and had a meal at Lee Kernaghan's (yes, him again) pub and revisited our koala and wombat friends at the zoo. We stopped for three nights at Agnes Waters (STOP PRESS! What a gorgeous place! Campground on the beach! Go there!) where we hummed, haed and heehawwed before deciding to retry our reef experience that was a little rough in Cairns. We are sooooo glad we did. We went out to Lady Musgrave Island (the southern most tip of the GBR), snorkelled, went in the semi-sub boat and glass bottomed boat, and the day was beautiful. (Just like the brochures, Mum!) Even taking into account the motor malfunction, and taking 3 1/2 hours to return to land (it had only taken 1 1/2 to get out there) it was fantastic!
We then spent a night at Hervey Bay and returned to Boreen Point and another visit to the gorgeous spot of Eumundi (where I nearly bought some $35 undies, just so I could call them my Eumundi-undies, but came to my senses just in time).
During all this time we had been weaving and dodging rain, the wee tent was falling apart (cheap tent/30 campgrounds? I am sure you get the picture!), and the gear in the car was getting a bit ferral, so although we had another night still up our sleeves before meeting the family here on the G.C. we decided to head here on Saturday anyway.
Well! Fate and friendship had another plan! We put a Brisbane address into Tomtom, thinking we would pop in and say hello to friends Lisa and Bruce (new arrivals to Aus) if they were home. They were home alright! We were in the door, the jug went on...the roast went in the oven...the beer came out...Jacob, Ellie and Nick took Rosa and Finn under their wings...the beds were arranged, and we were set! We were unprepared and very grateful! Cheers to the Keenans! We got a real buzz from being with mates after weeks of self sufficiency. We were given something we didn't know we needed. Now that is hospitality!
After a great Saturday night and a visit to the local market, we headed off on the final short leg of our journey which brought us here.
I have plans for a couple more posts - I'd like to record some of the statistics of the trip, for example we have travelled 7500km in the Spaceship so far, which could have taken us 2/3 of the way to London, Gordon tells me ( I think he's forgotten about the small matter of water).
If anyone is still out there and has a question about the trip...go ahead, ask!
Keep warm, southern hemispherers...dance madly in the sun, northern dwellers xxx

Rapidly descending...farewell the Whitsundays!
Go the All Whites! Out, but not down...nice effort! Luckily Aussies out too so all in the same boat there.
The weather is uncooperative at the moment so we are spending time travelling south in the hope that we will have a few nice days at a surfing beach before meeting other Caddie family members at the Gold Coast next weekend.
We stayed a night in Ayr and then back to a familiar spot at Airlie Beach last night. We had a lovely time yesterday at a waterfall near here. Dry, and not running, but inhabited by turtles, which we fed.
Off inland (north of McKay) to meet some platypus we hope...

Mission Beach
We spent the weekend in Chillagoe (cue western guitar twang and rolling tumbleweeds) and we only know it isn't a one horse town because we counted three in the paddock next to our campsite at the 'eco-lodge' which we figured stands for eco-nomy, not eco-logical. It had an observatory so we spent Saturday night star gazing, a first for us all.Awesome! Saturday was the hottest winters day of my life - over 30 we are sure...almost too hot to move, but we mosied down some red dirt roads to a swimming hole, and despite the trepidation re crocs we all had a splashingly good time!
Sunday we headed back to Cairns for two nights. Our stint on Daydream Is had whetted, not satisfied our longing for the reef and so yesterday we hopped on a boat (we had to choose from about 800 companies first)and headed to check out the GBR. Fantastic day overall, but as my internet time is almost gone, I will just say that the winds were 30 knots, and leave you to guess at what sort of boat ride we experienced....!
Tonight we are in Mission Beach - our first cabin night in a while...the sea is rough and rain threatens! xxxx

Port Douglas
Yes, Port Douglas is verrrry nice. 25 degrees - in the water! We spent a lovely day at the beach yesterday and an interesting, amusing and dubiously pc time at the cane toad races last night! Rosa was even a jockey for one race...oh dear me.
Cane toads were well cared for and not mishandled and as Gordy said would be dead otherwise (cos everybody hates them, they are an introduced species that have no natural predators here, and they cause lots of trouble) but once was definitely enough! We had dinner out last night - what a treat! I even had a pudding all to myself - which I believe, although you might not, was the first of the trip!
Yes, Port Douglas is very very very nice, but alas...we leave. We're heading into the tablelands..off we go!

The Tip of the Journey
We have spent the last two days at beautiful Cape Tribulation, where the Daintree Rainforest meets the beach. This is the most northern point of our Australian adventure. We enjoyed getting up close and personal with a bat (!) and hung out of a boat spotting crocs. Now we are back in Port Douglas and I guess this marks the beginning of our descent. We will spend the next 2 1/2 weeks leapfrogging our way back to the Gold Coast, filling in the gaps of places we missed on the way up, but would still like to see.
Tomorrow Caddies, Carrells, Cramptons and friends will gather in Fairlie to farewell Gordy's Uncle Graham, who was an uncle to us all. He welcomed all arrivals into his family with quiet pleasure and enjoyed nothing better than family gatherings. We are sad not to be there with everybody, but will fill our cups with lemonade and make a toast. And if we are sad, it will be for the things that will never happen again, but not for Uncle Graham who we know had an enviable certainty that he would be with his Mum and Dad now. We are sharing our memories and are grateful for the care Uncle Graham showed us, and for all those who cared for him throughout his life...'Cheers'
